Dealing with job burnout requires creative thinking and a desire for a more satisfying work life to get you back on track again.
The job that was once the highlight of your life has slowly over the months and years become a ball and chain. Your step used to be light as you approached your office but now you feel as if you are dragging around a huge round sphere of iron. Instead of breathing in deeply and thinking "I'm here!" you feel as if a crushing weight has descended on your chest and a sick feeling rolls in your stomach. How did it come to this? And what can you do to bring the old enthusiasm and zest for your job back?
Search for Something New in Your Old, Tired Job
Find some part of your job that you have left unexplored, something you have set on a back shelf and never gotten around to doing. Push your procrastination aside and take on this project with revived enthusiasm. It will challenge you and get you back into the rhythm of your career.
Engage in a New Hobby
Start a new hobby away from work and home. Having something else to concentrate on and look forward to during your work day will take that pressure of your job always being number one in your life. Balance should be what you are seeking - sometimes just having a home and work life is not enough and you need something else to focus on.
Stay Connected with Like-Minded People
Join new clubs and organizations in your field. Learn new techniques of the business and new ways of doing tasks. Having friends and acquaintances in the same business you are in will provide you with people to vent with and/or exchange ideas.
Treat Your Job Like A Job Instead of Your Life
Stop treating your job like your life. If you take away some of its importance, you will also take away some of the feelings of burnout and stress. A job is just that - a job. Leave your career worries and concerns in your office when you shut the door for the day.
Write it Down and Analyze
List the pros and cons of your job. Sometimes it takes writing out the good, bad, and ugly to realize that you may have a wonderful career - maybe you just need a reminder.
Experience a Different Career
Work a part-time job in a different field to see if it is something you would like to explore. You may set yourself on a whole new career path or develop a renewed respect for the job you already have. It's also a great way to make some extra cash for that luxury item or trip you've always wanted.
Take a Break
If you have vacation time coming, take a break from your workplace. A relaxing, refreshing time-out may be all that you need to return to work with your old exuberance and excitement. Limit or eliminate all communication between your office while you are gone. Focus on having a good time and enjoy yourself.
Mentor a Promising Employee
Sometimes all it takes is to take the focus off of yourself and concentrate on helping someone else. Assist an employee who may be struggling with her job, mentor a promising worker into a promotion, or help your boss with his workload. You will be surprised how refreshing it may be to go the extra mile to help someone in your organization.
Imagine Someone Else in Your Job
The true test of whether you can pull yourself from this slump is too picture someone else in your job. If your hackles rise and the first thought that enters your mind is "no way!" then there is still hope for recovering from this phase. On the flip side, if you are already subtly training someone to take your place, your attachment to your career has already been mentally severed and it is time to move on to bigger and better opportunities.
If none of the above can pull you from your job disinterest and dissatisfaction, maybe it is time to seek employment elsewhere and possibly change careers altogether. Do not stay in a job that you are unhappy with just because you are afraid to take a risk and start over. And money should never be the reason to stay in a dead-end job. It's your job satisfaction and inner happiness that is at stake here so change your current career to your satisfaction or take the next step and move on.
